Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as a little girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself through the medium of art. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma and decided to make a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of juries. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in a small production studio right out of high school. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
